The History of York RI RUFC
Where it all began

The Club was formed in1932 when the New Lane ground was opened. Until that time it had been known as 'The L&NER Rugby Union Club' and, although intended for railway employees, did admit non-railwaymen as players. Contact withother railway clubs was always strong and fixtures, especially with the Southern Railway continued for many years after World War 2.

The most successful period of the Club's history, so far, was in the 60's & 70's with 2 Yorkshire Sheild &  1 Yorkshire Cup Finals. There were also success at sevens winning in tournaments as far away as the Scottish Borders.

Present Day

The introduction of  League Rugby in 1987 has seen the clubs success waiver. Starting in Yorkshire Division 1 a lean period in  the 90's saw R.I. drop to Division 4 but steady improvement and promotion has seen the club rise back upto Division 2 for the 2005/06 season.

Currently the Club fields four senior, one Ladies and two junior sides and growing yearly. A ' Survivors Club' for retired former players thrives with more than 70 members, some in their eighties.

York R.I. Rugby Club is a very friendly club and welcomes new and old players/ members to join us!
